Syracuse won its sixth game of the season against Fairfield on Sunday. The Orange is off to its best start since 1996.

Coming off a shutout victory against Rhode Island, Syracuse (6-1-1) ended its road trip in Connecticut with another shutout victory, 3-0, against Fairfield (1-7). The Orange is off to its best start since 1996.

Both sides came out on the attack as each registered shots within the first three minutes of the game. SU struggled clearing the ball out of its own zone early with the Stags controlling the offensive possession. But as the contest progressed Syracuse gained its composure and evened the game out.

Sydney Brackett recorded three shots in the first 30 minutes, but it was Stephanie Skilton who mounted the first successful attack for the Orange. She scored in the 33rd minute on assists from Eva Gordon and Taylor Bennett.

The Orange maintained its offensive prowess and four minutes later Alana O’Neill came out of a scrum to put the ball past Fairfield goalkeeper Jenna Pike to extend the score to 2-0.

A myriad of fouls for the Orange eventually put Fairfield in scoring position in the middle of the second half. But the Orange capitalized off of the Stags’ errors and Brackett managed to secure her first goal of the season and her fourth shot of the game in the 73rd minute.

Fairfield would not launch another threatening attack until the 84th minute, but it squandered its opportunities again.

The Orange left Fairfield with its sixth win of the season, elevating its record to 6-1-1. This week it will face off against Buffalo on Thursday and begin Atlantic Coast Conference play with a matchup on Sunday against Notre Dame.
