Highlights from SA's Monday night meeting include discussions regarding study abroad, the Orange Education Program, the recent approval of a director of diversity affairs and the undergraduate research program.

Here are four takeaways from the Syracuse University Student Association’s Monday night meeting in Maxwell Auditorium:

Study abroad

SU Abroad Recruitment Specialist Briana Rinaldo came to the meeting and talked about statistics regarding SU undergraduates studying abroad. She shared with SA certain things that the SU Abroad office is doing in order to eliminate some roadblocks that come up when students try to study abroad, including increasing the number of abroad programs geared toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

Orange Education Program

Assemblywoman Madeleine Fitzgerald talked about the recent approval of the Orange Education Program, a pilot program that SA’s Academic Affairs Committee has worked to establish in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences. Fitzgerald said that upperclassmen, sponsored by a professor, will give 15-20 minute lectures via a portal through the program.

Student director of diversity affairs

SA Vice President Jane Hong said she was pleased that the SA position of student director of diversity affairs was approved through MySlice voting. Hong said the next step is to establish a written description of what the job will entail.

Undergraduate research

The deadline to apply for SA’s undergraduate research program has been extended to Friday, SA President Aysha Seedat said, adding that there is now $25,000 being allocated toward the initiative. That is an increase from the $20,000 that SA had originally planned on allocating. Faculty members will review all of the applications in order to keep applicants’ information confidential.
